The architect Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky (1897–2000) was much more than the inventor of the Frankfurt cuisine that made her famous. Throughout her long life, she was often the first: the first female architecture student in Austria and the first woman to work and be successful in this profession. The social question was an honest concern for her, for which she sought and found architectural solutions. Out of opposition to Adolf Hitler, she became a communist, became involved in the resistance, was convicted and narrowly escaped execution. When she could hardly get any more construction contracts in Vienna during the Cold War, she worked in Cuba, East Berlin and China. In her life and work she combined politics, pragmatism and pioneering spirit. With an afterword by architecture professor Uta Graff, Technical University of Munich, Chair of Design and Design.

Mona Horncastle studied philosophy and art history in Bamberg.
She was a publisher, founded a non-profit company for educational projects in 2013, and has also worked as a lecturer since 2017 (including at the Institute for Cultural Studies at the University of Leipzig). The “self-confessed language fetishist” writes books, art catalogs and curates exhibition texts.
