The catalog book for the exhibition illuminates two central modes of thought of modernity in an antithetical comparison - including the prehistory and aftermath up to the present day. Josef Hoffmann (1870–1956) and Adolf Loos (1870–1933) represent contrasting reactions to the fundamental problems of modern civilization, which were triggered by the process of industrialization and democratization. This resulted in two designs for modern lifestyles: Hoffmann wanted a comprehensive aestheticization of all areas of life, while Loos interpreted architecture and design not as a design task, but as a functional background for the development of individual personalities.
Published on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name (December 17, 2014–April 19, 2015) at the MAK.
