Motive:

Design: Ando Hiroshige (1797–1858)
From the 53 stations of the Tokaido (Hoeido-Tokaido): Kambara: Evening snow (Station 11, Sheet 12)

Travelers set off in the morning mist. In the foreground a traveler on a horse. Another traveler is carried in a sedan chair by two men. Next to him is a man carrying the luggage. The small group is heading towards Edo. The people in the background on the left are only vaguely visible, as are some houses, a grove and the Mishima Shrine, which is a famous historical site. Here, Minamoto no Yoritomo vowed to defeat the Taira family, which he eventually succeeded in doing, leading to the establishment of the bakufu (shogunate government) and his appointment as shōgun.
