The actor Nakamura Shikan IV (1831-1899) in the role of Higuchi no Jiro from the play “Hiragana seisuiki” performed at the Ichimura Theater in Edo in 1862. The play is about the events of the Genpei War (1180–1185) between the Minamoto and Taira families.
Higuchi is a Taira general who poses as the ship's captain Matsuemon in order to approach his enemies undetected. The pattern on the outer garment is typical for this role.
