What can the coffee house of tomorrow do? In order to rethink this culturally and socially important junction, the MAK and departure, the creative agency of the City of Vienna, invited people as part of the cooperation design> new strategies to an applied research project. Under the direction of the Viennese architect and coffee house expert Gregor Eichinger and under the guidance of raumlaborberlin, Antenna Design, New York, and Studio Andrea Branzi, Milan, more than twenty project ideas for the future of the coffee house were developed in design laboratories and some were implemented as models as part of an experimental setup. This research diary provides insights, but also opens up the space to think about or further develop concepts yourself the next time you visit a coffeehouse.
Published as documentation of the applied research project THE GREAT VIENNA COFFEE HOUSE EXPERIMENT (March 2 – November 13, 2011) in the MAK.
Texts by Thomas Geisler, Bettina Leidl, Markus F. Peschl and Thomas Fundneider, Christoph Thun-Hohenstein, interviews with Gregor Eichinger and eight coffee house managers as well as illustrated project descriptions.
